Everything Starts from "Altruism", Chugai Pharma Taiwan: Taking People to Heart is the Most Valuable Thing

Do you believe that a pharmaceutical company can invest a lot of time and money in research and development of drugs just to provide patients with the best treatment? Do you believe that a company is willing to keep up with evolving trends, just to encourage its employees to pursue work-life balance? Chugai Taiwan Pharma (CPT) has demonstrated that the real success of a company comes from the noble value of putting people first.

A clinical trial for hemophilia A non-antibody patients was coming to an end. Since the drug is still in the national health insurance (NHI) approval process, patients participating in the trial were not able to seamlessly continue with drugs covered by the NHI and were facing no drugs available, which would affect the quality of follow-up treatment. The pharmaceutical company that developed the drug, CPT, immediately mobilized its staffs and actively communicated with its headquarter in Japan, and was even willing to absorb up to ten million New Taiwan dollars in costs just to distribute the drugs to patients free of charge. There is a touching reason behind this decision.

For the second year in a row, employees’ family or friends and patients were invited to watch a sports tournament in support of World Hemophilia Day.

Patient centric healthcare is not a slogan, it's concrete action.

"The decision was actually quite difficult because the price of the drug is extremely high, distributing it to patients free of charge would affect the company's revenue, but the patients' needs were still the highest priority, and we didn't want them to have their disease worsen or relapse because waiting for the new drugs takes time," said Rong-Hua Chen, President of CPT, "therefore, we decided to try our best to get the approval from the headquarter, and it was finally approved." Doing what is best for patients is the most important priority for a pharmaceutical company, and it is also the corporate spirit that CPT has been embodying for years, continuously developing innovative drugs for patients with rare diseases or cancer and providing them a better quality of life.
However, this is not just a special exception. For pharmaceutical companies, the cost of developing new drugs is extremely high, and once the failure rate of clinical trials are too high, they will suspend research and development and usually ask the patients in the trial to switch to other drugs or treatments; rarely will they continue to provide drugs for the patients who are seeing effective results. Chen also shared that a previous clinical trial of a new drug for liver cancer, which was effective for only one patient, and was therefore about to be declared a failure. However, he recognized the importance of any effective treatment for cancer patients, and he again communicated with the headquarter, and finally got the approval of senior management to extend the new drug program in order to continue to treat this patient free of charge.
"Even if the drug is only effective for one person, if that person's life can be prolonged, that's a great relief because we are not just dealing with one person's life, but with the happiness of a family."

A corporate management mindset that keeps up with the times results in a happy workplace and employees

Apart from understanding the needs of patients, Chen expects himself to understand his employees as well. As early as seven or eight years ago, CPT began to evaluate its organizational culture, and through rolling reforms, CPT is committed to creating a happy workplace centered on mutual respect, trust, and organizational transparency. In addition to actively engaging in public welfare activities, emphasizing employee welfare, and organizing family days to create a better working environment and fulfill corporate social responsibility, Chen also recognizes the different career aspirations of the new generation of employees.

"We work for life, and not live to work," emphasizes Chen. "Gone are the days of unquestioning loyalty to the company or using higher pay to retain good employees; the new generation is more concerned with continuous self-growth and work-life balance." Known for being an innovative thinker, Chen not only understands and supports the mindset of young employees, but also thinks ahead for them.
For example, before the COVID-19 outbreak, CPT had already built and prepared digital tools to enable their employees to work remotely. At the same time, the company has developed a talent development program to provide employees with a variety of self-training competency courses to stimulate their enthusiasm and motivation for their work, and to pave the way for the transformation of new types of talents. Chen pointed out that "with the dynamic evolution of digital technology, corporate organizations and work styles are bound to see transformational change in the near future. A flexible, project-based team and people with a wide range of expertise are the only way to keep up with the times."

CPT is committed to the core value of "people-oriented" management, not only in innovation and research, but also in creating a quality and friendly workplace environment for its employees, while also embracing the future and continuously injecting innovative ideas into the company. From patients and employees to social care, Chugai’s efforts have been recognized with the HR Asia Best Companies to work for in Asia Awards for three consecutive years and has become a model of a happy company.
