Corporate ESG Prescription: Chugai Pharma Taiwan x BlueMagpie Tea x PackAge+ Co-create a Remedy for Sustainability

Chugai Pharma Taiwan is dedicated to advancing ESG sustainability efforts, taking concrete actions in areas such as environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture, health education, and public welfare. With the global SDGs as its guiding framework, the company builds on its core business strengths and collaborates with the Taipei City Government's Department of Economic Development through the “Taipei SElect” project to enhance its social influence.

This year, Chugai Pharma Taiwan has opted for a distinctive Mid-Autumn Festival gift—a box of “Russet Sparrow Millet with Shio Koji,” delivered in PackAge+ reusable cardboard packaging. This thoughtful gesture reflects a big commitment to sustainability. Chugai Pharma is a long-time partner of Taiwan BlueMagpie Tea, a social enterprise featured in the Department of Economic Development's Taipei SElect: ESG Practices, aiming to integrate environmental sustainability into its ESG actions. “While Chugai Pharma saves lives, Taiwan BlueMagpie Tea saves the environment. Acting as an environmental doctor, Taiwan BlueMagpie Tea has issued a prescription, complemented by Chugai Pharma’s corporate social responsibility efforts, to collectively safeguard the planet and enhance social well-being.”

Chugai Pharma x Taiwan BlueMagpie Tea: Creating a Remedy for the Environment

To demonstrate its dedication to environmental sustainability, Chugai Pharma Taiwan has aligned with Taiwan BlueMagpie Tea's “River Basin Recovery Project.” Through the promotion of eco-friendly farming methods, the company supports Taiwan Taiwan BlueMagpie Tea by adopting sustainable tea gardens, rehabilitating “Russet Sparrow Millet” through contract farming, and turning resulting tea and organic millet into gift sets to share with employees and business partners.

This year, Chugai Pharma Taiwan joined forces with Taiwan BlueMagpie Tea to initiate the “Russet Sparrow Millet Rehabilitation Project.” Focused on recovering river basins, the project promotes the Rukai indigenous traditions in Pingtung and safeguards the habitat of the endangered russet sparrows, with a population of fewer than 1,000 in Taiwan. By reviving millet culture, the project aspires to establish a model that balances millet cultivation, indigenous beliefs, and ecosystems.

Chugai Pharma Partners with Taiwan BlueMagpie Tea and PackAge+ to Launch Sustainable Mid-Autumn Festival Gift Sets

Driving Sustainability Initiatives to Enhance Brand Trust and Strengthen Sustainable Supply Chain Partnerships

In addition, through the Department of Economic Development's “Taipei SElect” project, Chugai Pharma Taiwan has partnered with PackAge+, a social enterprise that promotes circular packaging and is featured in Taipei SElect: ESG Practices. Circular packaging is used for the delivery of gift sets, reducing packaging waste and offering recycling and cleaning jobs to underprivileged individuals, thereby spreading love while promoting sustainability. Director Chou remarked, “PackAge+'s data shows that 80% of partners returned the cardboard boxes for recycling—a result far surpassing expectations. The positive feedback and influence are truly touching. True success comes from heartfelt commitment, not simply following rules.”

Through several collaborations, Chou observed that the company’s sustainability initiatives received overwhelmingly positive feedback from internal and external stakeholders, including employees and business partners like suppliers. These efforts not only deepened employee alignment with the company’s values but also bolstered trust in the corporate brand and fostered stronger collaboration within the sustainable supply chain.

Susan Chou, HR Director from Chugai Pharma Taiwan, noted that having so many social enterprises in the market addressing environmental and social issues is a blessing for Taiwan. The partnerships with Taiwan BlueMagpie Tea and PackAge+ are some of the most fulfilling achievements in Chugai Pharma Taiwan’s ESG actions. Looking forward, the company aims to engage with more social enterprises and, under the shared vision of sustainability, expand into innovative environmental projects, public welfare initiatives, and the development and management of sustainable supply chains to drive positive impact together.
